Around 10:11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, a motorcyclist passed away in Newport Beach after suffering severe injuries during a crash at an intersection. At the intersection of Irvine Avenue and Orchard Drive, a white 2015 Mazda CX-5 was involved in a crash with the driver of an orange 2014 Yamaha FZ-09 motorcycle.

The crash occurred when the motorcyclist went northbound on Irvine while the Mazda driver turned left onto eastbound Orchard from southbound Irvine. According to authorities, the woman driving the Mazda was not harmed. Unfortunately, however, the motorcyclist was thrown off his vehicle and experienced critical injuries. The motorcyclist was brought to a trauma center nearby, but tragically died of his injuries within an hour of the accident.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

Anyone with more information is urged to call the Newport Beach Police Department’s investigator Bill Hanson at (949) 644-3746.
