Fatal San Diego Accident

A fatal crash occurred Monday when a San Diego man drove the wrong way on two San Diego freeways, resulting in his own death and serious injuries for two others.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Doerr, the 35-year-old man was driving a Volkswagen Jetta on Interstate 8 at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard going eastbound in the westbound lanes early on Monday morning.

Later that morning, at 1:54 a.m., the driver tried going south on Interstate 5 in the northbound lanes. He successfully got on the ramp connecting northbound I-5 to westbound I-8 before he hit the front end of a Toyota Camry. The San Diego man driving the Jetta died at the scene, while the 22-year-old Santee woman driving the Camry suffered major injuries and was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital. A passenger in the Camry, a 36-year-old El Cajon woman, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.

CHP accident specialists are investigating the deadly crash, and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to determine if the Jetta driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
